Sexual Assault Training Institute - SATI
The purpose of the Sexual Assault Training Institute (SATI) is to increase:
- victim safety
- offender accountability, and
- collaboration between criminal justice system responders and allied professionals.
This goal is achieved through the provision of regular, quality and professional discipline-specific and multidisciplinary trainings which are intended to increase knowledge, skills and victim sensitivity.
A summary of the development and implementation of a statewide discipline specific sexual assault training program
The SATI was created in late 2001 after the 1999 Summit and several statewide surveys indicated the need for adequate, specific and quality training was a top priority in order to improve local and community response to adult and adolescent sexual assault. In response to that need, the SATI developed a model to create and provide statewide multidisciplinary and discipline specific sexual assault training for advocates, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and medical professionals.
For each discipline, the SATI formed an Advisory Committee to create a training outline. Once the outline was established, the appropriate Task Force committee reviewed and approved the curriculum and subsequently selected a national trainer and expert to conduct a training using the Oregon outline. The SATI recruited experts from each discipline, and using an application and interview process, selected state instructors to shadow the national trainer(s) to prepare them to conduct future SATI trainings.
The first SATI training was held in early 2002. Since its inception, the SATI has trained well over 1,000 professionals in Oregon.
Currently, the SATI provides training to:
- advocates
- juvenile justice
- law enforcement
- prosecutors
- corrections
- offender treatment/management
- Department of Human Services
- nurses and medical staff
- other who respond to or work with sexual assault survivors and/or offenders
Additionally, the SATI works with specific agencies, departments and government entities to provide training specific to their needs.
